What Is All This Reformation Talk About?

There is today, sadly, an unawareness (which is a polite and more respectable way to say ignorance) regarding the surroundings and significance of the Protestant Reformation. This has stemmed from, I believe, a lack of study of church history. This needs to change.

Is the Reformation relevant for today? Yes. Why? The Reformation still matters because the Gospel still matters and the Reformation is a gospel issue. The Roman Catholic Church deformed the true Gospel. The Reformers are called such because they reformed what had been deformed.

However, when it comes to a lack of understanding about the Reformation not all is lost for we have a plethora of solid resources today that can inform the unaware. Do yourself, your family, your children, and your church a favour; study the Reformation. It is rich and significant.

As an hors d'oeuvre of sorts are these words from Dr Yuille of SBTS:

The Reformation was in many ways a struggle between two Latin words: et (and) & sola (alone).

The Roman Catholic Church affirmed the authority of Scripture and tradition, salvation by grace and effort, justification by faith and works, salvation by grace and effort; moreover, it pointed people to Christ and saints, masses, pilgrimages, penances, and indulgences as the way to obtain peace with God.

In marked contrast, the Protestant Reformers affirmed five great Solas: Scripture alone, Grace alone, Faith alone, Christ alone, and God's glory alone.

Semper Reformanda.
